Our Story

City Barn started with a familiar frustration.

You know the one: the local food store prices, no convenient home delivery or waiting a week for something that should have been easy to find.

That’s the problem we set out to fix.

We’re a small, Calgary-based operation. We source authentic Nigerian and West African pantry staples and deliver them on a fixed schedule to homes across Calgary, Chestermere, Airdrie, and Okotoks.

Why the delivery schedule matters

We only deliver twice a week. That’s not a limitation — it’s the whole idea.

By batching all orders placed before each cutoff into a single optimized route, we cut out the cost of running a van across the city for one or two deliveries at a time. We build that saving into our pricing, not our margin. The result is honest product prices and delivery that actually makes sense.

If you can plan ahead by two days — and most people shopping for pantry staples can — you’ll get exactly what you ordered, on the day you expected it, at a price that doesn’t make you squirm!

What we carry

Right now we’re focused on shelf-stable staples: suya spice (yaji blend), dried catfish cutlets, and a short list of additions rolling out over the coming weeks.

We’re deliberately starting narrow and doing it right. Every product goes through a quality check before we list it. Every pouch is properly packed to arrive in the same condition it left us.

As demand grows and the range expands, we’ll add more — ground crayfish, garri, dried pepper, ogbono, and more. You can join the waitlist for any upcoming product directly on the shop page.

Who this is for

City Barn Foods is built specifically for lovers of Nigerian and West African dishes — and for anyone else who cooks with these ingredients and has been making do with whatever was available.

We know this community. We know the price comparisons happen in WhatsApp groups. We know when a product isn’t quite right, word gets around fast. We’re building this business with that in mind, which means we’d rather carry fewer products done well than a long catalogue done carelessly.

If you have a product you’d love to see stocked, a question about an order, or feedback on anything we’re doing, we want to hear from you. Use the contact page and flag it at any point.

“We’re building the store we always wanted. We hope you find it useful.”
